
Penjikent district
Penjikent district was formed on November 23, 1930. Ancient manuscripts indicate that Penjikent was formed in 15 century and till 18 century it used to be regarded as one of the biggest cities like Samarkand and Bukhara. Till present time the region has archeological digs and museum of ancient Penjikent, a site of old settlement. Mausoleum of Abuabdullo Rudaki is situated in Panjrud village. In 1958 there was organization of museum of regional studies. It is regarded as a center of tourism.
Demographic Information:The area of the district is 3.67 sq km. Population is 171000 people. In Penjikent Tajiks, Uzbeks and people of other nationalities live together. Population density is 27.6 people per a sq km. The district consists of 14 jamoats: Amondara, Voru, Yori, Kolkhozchiyon, Kosatarosh, Mogiyon, Rudaki, Sujina, Farob, Khurmi, Chinor, Shing, Sarasm and Khalifa Hasan. District center is Penjikent.
Economy:Penjikent has some natural resources namely antimony, mercury, tungsten, phosphorus and such building materials as limetone, plaster, sand and road material. The agrarian sector plays a vital role in economy of the district. Such crops like tobacco, corn, grain, melons and gourds are grown in Penjikent. Also, the district has many gardens.
Penjikent has production enterprises: tobacco processing plant, canned factory, alcohol making factory, rice processing factor, flour and meat processing factory as well as transport entity, geological exhibition, archeological base (Mogiyon), airport, district enterprise of agricultural techniques.
